Zejtun
Residential Home for the Elderly opened on 10th March
1994, and was officially inaugurated on the 13th March
1994.The grounds cover 5200 square meters in area with
the building covering 2300 square meters, while total
floor area is about 4500 square meters. Adjacent to the
Home there is a Day Centre where the residents can integrate
with other elderly from the community. The Zejtun Home
was the first Government Home to be completely sub contracted
to CareMalta Limited.
The Home can today take up to one hundred
and sixty residents, following the successful completion
of an extension completed on the 8th April 2003. The Home
previously could accommodate 60 residents. This extension
was a public private partnership initiative in which CareMalta
was allowed to fund the completion of this new extension
to the home in return for an extension in the operating
contract the company held with Government. The extension
was completed in a record time of five months and five
days by Vassallo Builders Ltd., the contractor engaged
by CareMalta to deliver the extension as a complete turnkey
project.
Each unit comprising of a fitted kitchenette,
a small dining place, a sleeping area and shower room
en-suite. Most rooms have a balcony and enjoy country
and sea views. The Home is fully air conditioned with
double glazing and suspended ceilings. A
nurse call system, smoke detectors, shower seats and grab
sails and continuous handrails in the circulation spaces
are some features that were incorporated in the Home.
The Home incorporates double-height entrance
hall, dining area, fully equipped kitchen, Chapel, Mortuary,
Hairdressing Salon, Manager's office. Doctor's / Nurse
room, Laundry room, two assisted bathrooms,
two TV lounges and two staff rooms. There
are also two interior courtyards, a terrace, besides guests toilets and other amenities.
The residents are looked after by CareMalta
trained staff - which includes the services of a nurse
and round the clock caring, The Home offers a comprehensive
service to the residents which incorporates all their
needs from the physical to the social and emotional. This
support is offered in full collaboration with the relatives
of residents. Weekly outings are organised and are well
attended. The Chapel serves as a converging point where
all the residents meet in prayer.
